"The B Sides"

Right now I’m listening to CDs of the B sides of the famous Anthology of American Folk Music collection from 1952. These are all tunes commercially recorded to 78s. The first 3 decades of the 20th century probably saw more diverse music being recorded commercially than ever since. This set represents a recent notion to put all the flip sides, the ones Harry Smith did not choose, on CD. The transfers are all quite elegantly done, somehow compensating for the inherent deficiencies of the 78 record medium and the abuse that most of the original records must have suffered while being played on contemporary phonographs.
