Bentley is gone

We lost our Poodle-Havanese mix rescue dog Bentley this morning at 9:13am. He died in my arms, where he wasn't alone or wasn't afraid. Then I held him for another 15 minutes. Letting him go was probably the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. He was a couple months shy of being 15 years old. He had cancer. In his throat and nose. He hadn't eaten for a couple days, and was passing blood from his nose, so his time was short in any case. He had a heart murmur, so anesthesia or surgery would not have likely been survivable for him. I took him on a four-hour Buggy ride yesterday and he seemed to enjoy that. We took all our usual routes, he got to set on the tractor at the Circle K that he liked, got to pee on all his favorite bushes. We must have ridden 25 miles. I know Bentley was only a dog, but it's incredible how a 13-pound critter can have such an impact on one's life.

There's a reason they're called "man's best friend.'

Condolences. I never had a pet but understand the importance they play in people's lives.

All the best

Barring a miracle (never say NEVER) Bentley was our last dog. I'm getting too old to train a puppy and the wife couldn't handle a large dog. Bentley will be a hard act to follow. Of course, I said that when Webster died, two years before we got Bentley. We said then we wouldn't have another small dog. I never had a dog when I was a kid, but I have always had a cat. I don't remember ever going to sleep at any home I've lived in without having a cat in bed with me. ;)

I am so sorry, Greg, Mr. Bentley was more than a dog, like Chris said, he was "man's best friend", and he was your best friend. Like Walter, I never had a dog either. Growing up I had bad allergies, so I was allergic to just about anything and everything. To top it off, what I was allergic too would also give me an asthma attack. The funny thing, no dog, do cat, but I was not allergic to rabbits so that was my pet, and she was my best friend too. I knew Mr. Bentley and if and when I ever get to AZ again, I will miss seeing him.

Sorry to hear about Bentley. Most dogs give unconditional love, especially to those that take good care of them.

I'm sure that Bentley had a very good life with you.
