I know the basics of inductors and how they work ... but what is the purpose of one in line with the woofer?

To filter out high frequencies per this article.

I wonder if that enhances the tweeter response ?

Well that makes sense ....inductor coils control IF frequencies...just never thought of using one to block frequencies. I figured the cap was doing that job
