How often do you see one of these? Doubt I'd trust the original caps even though they were never used.

I was not aware that Fisher sold kits.

H. H. Scott also sold some kits. DIY had been a big part of radio from the earliest days, when all equipment was home-built. Kits were a feasible project back when components were individual--caps, resistors, diodes, chokes, etc. Once entire circuit were contained in chips, the whole idea collapsed.

When my eldest nephew was a little kiddo, too young to build anything, I bought a Radio Shack portable AM radio kit (prewired PCB) and mounted it in a home-built case with Plexiglas so you could see the innards. I made a separate case for the batteries and added some protective diodes and LEDS to indicate when the battery polarity was correct, so there was some hands-on activity. The speaker also was separate and plug-in. He went on to get a PhD in biomechanical engineering, likely not due to that device but who knows how it may have influenced him. Another nephew turned into the soldering iron guy, got a robotics PhD at Carnegie-Mellon, and is working on self-driving vehicles. But that was all just following his own interests with no help from me at all.
