RCA Victor tuner chassis RC1192 FM-AM-FM/AM

This far out chassis was used prior to a good plan to implement stereo multiplex, this the "living Stereo" monniker, referring more to the records versus a tuner with FM-AM simulcast. This is not HiFi by any means when one channel has FM R+L mono and the other is standard AM, via dedicated 12BE6-12BA6-19T8 signal path while FM is also active.
Issues with these besides silver mica disease is the 6E5 eye tube being dim to dead and wacky FM reception due to the German-made (via general instrument) 12DT8 tuner. I have covered the tuner problems by way of posts in RCA, Motorola and Magnavox forums. Zenith and others also used these 1960-64 just before solid-state tuners debuted in Magnavox.
The tired and rare 6E5 can be replaced 1 for 1 using a very-common test-equipment eye tube type 1629 provided the following modifications are made;
1. 6E5 uses 6-pin socket, 1629 is 8-pin octal, this is a no brainer, just consult a tube manual for the pinout. Target resistor is still 1 meg
2. 6E5 has 6.3 volt heater, 1629 has 12.6 volt heater, to boost and make it DC, use a doubler circuit formed by two 1N4005 and two 1000 mf caps.
Worked like new using AVC input voltages, closed fully only on strongest stations
you saw it here first!

I have done that mod as well... the 1629's are so much easier and cheaper to get, and that 1 meg is usually always way up in value

I have a Lafayette signal generator much like that one. I still have a couple 6E5's on hand, but the time will come when I need to use something else. The 6E5 in the Imperial is essentially totally dead. I put it in new in 2014 and doesn't have a million hours on it. Magnavox should have made provisions to cut off the eye tube completely if you are not using the tuner. Running the eye tube all the time is an expensive extravagance. I reckon when our old stereos were built, 6E5's were still plentiful and cheap....

I bought that from a guy from RI, whose Dad serviced electronics. The inside looks rather spartan with three tubes but it works great. These may have been kits also but it is very obviously Japanese-made.

I got mine from my elmer, Lloyd, who had it rigged up as an AM transmitter.

The RC1192 was in three consoles I've had in my shop, two I have since sold. The next year (1962?) used a different style and tuning eye tube was the "bar type" 6FG6/EM84.
I may find one liberated from a console that can't be restored, there is a major swap meet next month in my area.
