Admiral Byrd

Post: # 19110Post TC Chris »

Here's an interesting piece about Admiral Richard E. Byrd's Antarctic expeditions, and in particular, the Explorer's Club flag he carried in 1939.

If the NYT lets you in, you will see 3 cool vehicles. One, the first, appears to be a Ford Tri-Motor airplane. The second, in 1930, shows Byrd in a NYC ticker-tape parade in 1930, in an open Packard. It was the grand car of the day, right? And the third is the Antarctic Snow Cruiser, a massive motor home created for traversing the snow of the polar area. It had a diesel-electric drive system. It failed because of the lack of traction of its huge treadless balloon tires.

There's also a picture of my hero, FDR.
