We changed classis car insurance companies

Post: # 17431Post electra225 »

There was a discussion on the forum awhile back about classic car insurance. We have been with Condon and Skelly since 1987. Their customer service for the last five years or so had badly degraded. When we moved permanently to AZ, they sent our insurance premium notices to our old address in Missouri. We didn't get them. Then, when that was straightened out, they sent our insurance cards to our new AZ address, but they were Missouri insurance cards. The car is registered in AZ. This year, we renewed our policy and they sent us Missouri insurance cards again. So, we found a local broker who has found that Condon and Skelly is still the cheapest at $238 per year, Grundy is next at $248 per year and Hagerty a lot higher at $380 per year. This for 300K/300K liability /property damage, Uninsured/underinsured motorist, towing, etc., and $40,000 agreed value. 0 deductible for comprehensive, 0 deductible for collision. We are probably going to go with Grundy and see how they are. They allegedly have on-shore customer service and we have a local agent/broker. Hagerty is just too much money out here for coverage. You guys back in the Midwest don't have the traffic and red light runners we have, so the liability risk is lower. We really wanted to do business with Hagerty based on you guys sharing your experiences, but not for that much more money. Maybe someday, though..... ;)

For classic car insurance? We pay that for regular car insurance, but classic car insurance is not that bad, but we only get 2,500 miles a year driving before they squawk about us driving our classis too much. When we used to tour, we had to call C&S and let them know we were going on a longer trip. They never gave us any grief about it.

I think the current bill, just got it the other day, from Hagerty was about $380.00 for a year. My current bill for regular car insurance was $950.00 for six months. That is almost $200.00 more than it was six months ago. One of my vehicles is a 2020 and the other one is a 1994 rust bucket. We are privileged here in Michigan to be one of twelve state that have No-Fault car insurance. The agents keep telling us it the greatest thing since sliced bread, but my wallet tells me something different. The other thing, there were a lot of storms this past spring with large hail and wind so lots and lots of claims none of which was in my area but the whole state gets to pay for it. Also, the State of Michigan has an uninsured tax that we pay into which amounts to an extra $75.00 per vehicle per six months so that's $300.00 per year for me, and I'm being told that the State is planning on raising that tax considerably.

And, my homeowner's insurance went up $225.00 per year because of the same spring storms. I am no in the poor house trying to pay just for insurance.

Okay, I'll stop griping now......

My goodness. $950 for six months? I think the Mini is change off $400 for six months and I thought that was terrible. Hagerty is the same for you as it is for what they quoted me. Insurance is cheaper here than it was in Missouri. They said the problem there was cars hitting deer.

Michigan has a huge deer problem. There were over 52,000 car-deer collisions recorded in 2021 here. They eat all the native plants and the decorative flowers and shrubs we use in our yards. They are a species of vermin. I got my first one in the Ranger a few years back.

Car insurance costs vary because of state law requirements as well. Michigan is a "no fault" state, which means that you are required to buy insurance to cover your own losses, financial and physical. You can't just go uncovered and sue others if they hit you.

My Hagerty bill for the Mustang and the Chevy, two vehicles, is $650 for a year. I pay them another $70 for the "Driver's Club," which includes their good car magazine and towing. Yay for towing when you're driving a vintage vehicle. I'm often fairly far from home and late at night in the Mustang.

Deer are pests more than vermin. They eat anything they can reach that looks green. We had a herd of deer we watched when we were in Missouri. Many were so tame you could have gone deer hunting with a hammer. If you had a garden, it had best be inside a substantial fence, or you were very likely to share it with the deer at some point. The biggest issue with deer was their failure to yield the right of way to motorists...... ;)

I still vote for vermin. My mantra is "I do NOT report poachers." My sister has a guy who will come in with his hunting bow and thin the herd in her yard. I'm pretty sure nobody looks too closely at the season-open date. Deer populations are way above historic normal levels in MI. The greatest concentration is down around our SW and SE urban regions. They and their ticks give us a bunch of diseases like Lyme. I encourage extermination.
