Does anyone know what the original cartridge was from the factory?... I asked on vinyl engine and all I get are these high dollar pickering and shure etc ... so since this is a 4 speed changer , do you use the same cartridges for those as well?...seems to me if 78 speed was available they would have supplied a cartridge to play all records in the 60's not just micro grooves

Vinyl Engine runs a couple notches above console stereos in what they talk about. I don't think I can answer your question, but I'd think you could get almost anything that would fit in the headshell. Back in the day, cartridges were optional equipment when you bought a turntable or even some changers. By "optional equipment" I meant that many devices were sold either without a cartridge of with your choice of cartridges. Console stereo changers tended to come with "standard" cartridges, presumably so they could be sold to a price point.

I checked Gary's website and it says that Dual changers came with Audio Technica cartridges, models AT-3600L and AT-3482P. I'm not sure that helps you much, though.

looking at the brochure for the 1009 it mentions 3 different carts available...yet nothing is mentioned about playing 78's even though it can ... in the mid sixties there were still many 78's around , how they could ignore that segment all together ?... right now this has a pickering cart and IMO it is junk... not the cart but the styluses they use....they last around 5 hours on normal micro groove records before it starts skipping... how long would it last on a 78? 10 mins?

I friend way back when I was in college had a Sylvania portable stereo in his dorm room and later the apartment he shared with others. That Sylvania had a Shure magnetic cartridge with a flip needle. I have no idea if something like that is available anymore, in magnetic that is, and is the cartridge you are looking for magnetic? My thought, with a removable head shell, you would switch out head shells if you wanted to play 78's and have a cartridge specific for playing the different speeds.

I have a DJ turntable with a Stanton 500 series cartridge. My understanding is the Stanton can be used for playing 78's with the appropriate needle in place of the ellyptical stylus used for LP's. How about using a GE variable reluctance cartridge? Can those be mounted in a standard headshell?

A dual 1009 was one of my first real higher-end purchases. Dual sold record changers. Cartridge manufacturers sold cartridges. I purchased a Shure M55E and eventually replaced it with a Stanton 681E. That went through several stylii until I moved on to a Shure V15 type III.

I'm not familiar with dual-stylus stereo magnetic cartridges, although there may be some. The old mono GE VR-II models are available, and there was a GE VR stereo model eventually. I've got VR-II carts in several old turntables.

The prices for a stupid 78 stylus for one of those cartridges is crazy... 40 bucks! ... you can buy 2 magnetic AT3600 cartridges with stylus for that price..

Gary wants $150 for a new GE VR cartridge with a diamond/sapphire needle. The replacement needles are less than $20. I didn't know they were still available new. I have never played LP's with a GE VR cartridge, but I haven't found anything better to play 78's with except possibly a Concert Grand. That is a tad overkill just to play 78's.

The 1009 I bought from Rat Shack in Aug '68 to take to college had a Pickering in it, don't remember what one.

I went with a Audio technica 3600... it is a cheap magnetic , it plays great at 3 grams , but output is a tenth of a volt less than the pickering.. and it shows on where the volume needs to be set now..

So here is a dumb question... I noticed on the Dual head shell the grounds are reversed... instead of red/green,white/blue... I got red/blue , and white /green I know a ground is a ground , but could there be any difference in sound wired like this?...

My pea brain says no difference. There's a +RH, +LH and then there is a -RH and -LH. As long as the wires at the cartridge, corresponds to the to the correct connections at the receiver I would think it would be ok. Or am I not understand the question?

Is there a color code for cartridge wiring? What happens if you reverse the positive and the negative wires?

There is a color code, and I printed it out last week from a Shure web site. Here's the link:

If you reverse, you get reversed polarity on the output (the speaker-come-moves-forward gets reversed to speaker-cone-pulls-back). There are some Golden Ears who claim to be able to hear reversed polarity. Me, I doubt I could detect it in an A/B test. Probably best to do it right, if only because accumulated errors add up.

And I wonder if some cartridges have grounded shells? If so, you want the shell to be connected to ground.

My parents got a 1009 in 1967, along with HH Scott receiver and Altec-Lansing speakers from a strip mall store in San Antonio when I was 4 - I will never forget the smell of that place There was a magnetic Pickering V15-III in it always, nobody was playing 78's on it either.

Dad even hid the little black 45 RPM "puck" so we had to play our 45s on the GE clamshell "thunder box" in my room LOL.
The Dual's stacking post was always used - my little brother and I learned how to handle records but not how to cue a stylus.

Cautionary note on Dual head shells and silver-plated contacts at both ends of the cartridge wires and one side of tone arm wires:

Those cart wires were not soldered initially and MUST be soldered to restore continuity. Merely stripped of just enough insulation, a few strands folded under and laid into terminals, crimped, just simple pressure that gives way as insulation shrinks and humidity enters. Before I discovered this, I was polishing and re-tensioning these contacts when the real issue was silver reacting with copper.
