Speaker rejuvenation without reconing

Post: # 12645Post electra225 »

I thought I posted a link to this video on another topic, but now I can't find it. So, to save confusion, I'll post it again under its own topic. Then maybe I won't lose it..... ;)

The speaker in my little Magnavox record player didn't sound good. Hard to describe the condition, exactly, but let's say for sake of argument that it wasn't going to work like it was. The cone, incidentally, is perfect. I saw an Uncle Doug video on speaker rejuvenation and decided to try it on the Magnavox speaker. He recommends using contact cement. I didn't have any, so I used GC Service Cement. It worked.

How about some pictures? These show the speaker after rejuvenation. The area around the edge is not as dark in real life as it is in the picture. You can barely see it. Now that the speaker cone doesn't show thru the grille, I won't need grille cloth.

Thank you, I think I will try that on a couple of old speakers I have.

This method doesn't stiffen the cone. I don't think you'd want that since it might affect the bass. This is flexible. The idea is to soak the paper on the cone and re-attach it to the gasket and the speaker basket. The theory on why that is important is that the speaker cone rattles between the gasket and the basket as it gets older and the adhesive gives up its grip. It's been there 65 years, way past what it was ever designed to be in operation.
