BRRRRRRRR

Just got in from clearing the sidewalk off from the snow. Not a lot of snow fell....but the winds....oh my!

According to my HVAC thermostat in the house (it has a temperature sensor outside and displays the outdoor temperature), it was - 4 * F.

Thanks to the unrelenting wind, the "feels like" (windchill) is about - 25* F

I'm a warm weather person. Not liking this one bit. Fingers crossed I don't loose power (old neighborhood with lots of old trees).

The town in Missouri we lived near was -7 today at noon with 50 mph wind gusts, giving a wind chill of -25. They say real temp of -15 tonight. This is why we moved to AZ. The sun never shone in Missouri for weeks on end. That part of Missouri is not equipped for that kind of cold. It was 34 there this morning at daylight. It dropped over 40 degrees from then until just past noon when I checked. The thing that may save them is that the ground is not frozen. The ground may be warm enough to save the water supply from freezing. Tree limbs falling and knocking out power will be the biggest threat with all the wind. Good thoughts go out to everyone on the forum who is fighting the weather. Stay warm and stay safe...... :D

I made my trip of 145 miles SE without event. There was a bit of snow midway (around Clare, for Michiganians). The ground was bare on arrival but by the time I had made dinner there were 2" of snow on the ground. Not cold yet. We are downwind of a vast heat sink called Lake Michigan, so our temp swings are moderate usually and the extremes are the same. The other day it was 15 deg. F out when I was ready to go to work so I chickened out and drove. Bicycling isn't hard except for the eyes--the wind in the cold makes them water so much it's hard to see. We will see what the temps and precip do here overnight.

It's 19 and windy this morning. The last overcast and precip was last night. I've made arrangements for Mr. Cat to be fed during my Christmas time off. According to Weather Underground, it will be back up to the 50's the end of next week.

12 degrees and windy here on the Lake Huron shore. Maybe 4" of snow. Out on Saginaw Bay, winds at 44 mph, gusting to 50. Me, I'm in fleece, drinking coffee and catching up on reading.

Where are you in Nebraska Dr.R?
Our son and D-I-L are driving to Kearney as we speak, it's about 7 degrees & and sunny there, but hopefully the roads from CO to NE are clear, or open at least? I know it's been brutally cold but not sure how much snow they got.

It's not like NY where they just keep dumping salt on the highways until they are dry - they even call it their "dry roads policy", but it should be called the "rusty car policy".

It was 44 degrees and raining here at 10 AM, we took some carrots and beets out of the garden and filled up the bird feeders, but by 1 PM it was snowing hard and had dropped 20 degrees, and about 20 more to go tonight... a hard freeze.

Here on the west coast of Michigan it was 6 when I looked at the thermometer this morning. It's gone downhill ever since. I'm guessing we had about 3" of snow today but it's hard to tell because the wind keeps moving it around. The weather guessers say 3-5 tonight with stronger winds and about the same for Christmas Eve. They also guess 41 and rain by Thursday. No wonder my sinuses are all screwed up.

I'm in Lincoln. The southeast portion of the state. It was a lot nastier to the west. I think it was better they were traveling today rather yesterday or the day before.

This would indicate road closures, not sure how well it is updated though...

2nd try. I saved the first one as a draft but can't find where drafts are hidden. Still cold here--did not get over 17 deg. F. here and the wind is still blowing 40 mph. Here are two pix over Saginaw Bay. One photo looks straight out, NE--next stop, Canada. The other looks to the left, N along the shoreline. There is snow and broken ice along the shore, then newer ice, then open water out farther. Water is interesting stuff. Like most materials it gets denser as it gets colder. The. surface water cols and sinks; warmer water from below rises, then cools and sinks. But then just before it reaches the freezing point, water gets less dense (ice floats, right?). That strange behavior keeps us alive. If it just kept getting denser, lakes wold freeze from the bottom up and would never thaw in the spring.

Sorry you are having issues with drafts. Try this....

Go over to the right upper corner of the home page, click on your username. Click on "user control panel". On the left side of that page, you will see "manage drafts". From there, you can edit, delete, or post drafts. Any more questions, just ask. Good luck.

Well, here's my storm's casualty. My 8 foot tall prickly pear cactus. Fallen like a house of cards.

Believe it or not, I have a couple of prickly pear cactus in my backyard here in MIchigan, and right now they are sitting under a foot of snow. They shrivel up like a 100-year-old man's skin during the winter. Come spring, they seem to come back to life and look great. They have beautiful yellow almost translucent flowers that only last one day after blooming. It's amazing how they adapted to Michigan weather conditions.

Yes, there was a bloom for each of those purple "pears".

That's a lot of blooms, and yours are purple. Interesting the difference in colors. So, is yours uprooted or just kind of knocked down from the wind?

Sorry about your big cactus, Rex. An eight foot tall prickly pear cactus is a big one. When they fall in the desert, of course nobody cleans up the mess. It's not long until one of the "paddles" takes root and a new cactus replaces the old one. Wonder if that will happen with yours? Wonder if you could get a start of the old plant and start a new one inside until it grows enough to plant outside?
