I Finally Got Around To It

Sam's club offered a generator that was low enough in price and just high enough in power for me to buy. I ordered it last weekend and Sam e-mailed me and said it was to be delivered ahead of schedule, yesterday. I had it to be delivered to my workplace. A half hour after I got to work the Fedex truch pulled up and away. Thinking it might be on another vehicle I waited that night, checking the tracking. At 6, the tracking said no info available for my parcel. At 8, it said that it would be delivered on the 17th. This morning it said it will be delivered Monday. I just wish Fedex could deliver a parcel to me on the date and time specified without getting the Tom Hanks treatment.

Are you going to wire it into your home power supply, or use it as a portable?

It's a little one, just a portable.

The unit finally arrived today. after I( had researched and ordered it, I came across this video by a person who researched it much the same as I did. This is the one I purchased.

That unit should come in handy should the power go out. It will run the fridge or freezer so you won't lose all your refrigerated food. That alone will pay for it on the first use. Good luck.

It looks like a good one, Rex. I hope you never have to use it.

Finally there has been a weekend without foul weather nor a cataclysm to take care of, so I got out the generator, oiled it and put it out to test/break in. I had re-gapped the plug not long after getting it as I had heard they were off on YouTube. I got some gas and some sta bil and fueled it up The little thing started on the second pull. I'm running it on a small room heater as the dummy load. Not much grunt cuttung in it's half capacity on the heater. I'm thankful that I have an old gas can designed to fill up and pour out without going through a nuclear refueling operation. I used Mobil 1 of the requisite weight instead of the unknown brand supplied with the unit. It runs relatively quietly. The downside to all this is that I have to store that stinkin' gas in the garage.

How much fuel does it use per hour? Mobil 1 is the berries for small engines. Makes them easier to start in all kinds of temperatures. You might consider one of those plastic outdoor storage cubbies they sell at HD and Lowes. We have one we store gas and lawn chemicals in. Keeps that fumy stuff out of the garage and away from the gas water heater.

I always remember the time when I was moving to take my first real full-time job. I had arrived in the new town with a suitcase full of clothes and bummed a place to sleep from a co-worker while looking for an apartment. But the fuel-return line on the '69 4-4-2 was leaking so I took it to a gas station for a new bit of rubber tubing. The service guy ran it up on the lift and hung his incandescent service light, one of those bulbs in a cage, up on the chassis somewhere. All I remember was that he had not secured it well and when he left to grab some tubing it crashed to the floor adjacent to the puddle of gas dripping from the car. The bulb broke and the filament flashed. It was a genuine "Oh s__t" moment, one where you're just waiting for the disaster. But luck was on my side that time.

It'll probably take a few runs to get an idea how much it's using. I didn't fully fill the tank, just to the bottom of it's strainer. That ran it for about 4 1/2 hours alternating between half and a minimal load per the break in instructions. I'll look into the cubbies. Sounds like a good idea. Mobil 1 has been very very good to me.

I got home from work last evening to the smell of gas by the garage. I went inside and the garage smelled like I had poured it all over the floor. It appears the can's bottom is porous. I put it outdoors to seep into the pine needles. This morning I went to Tractor Supply and got a new can.

It seems like a good one. It did pretty well with Project Farm,

It's been some time since I had to purchase a gas can. My, they are certainly proud of them, but it looks to be a good one.

If you haven't, be prepared for a revelation. Every one of them has a gimmick on the spout designed to aggravate.
