Last evening my Explorer presented me with it's first code, a Ford P0442. I hope it's a glitch. I erased it to see if it reappears.

Good thoughts for it being a glitch.

Made it to and from work without a CEL. So far so good.

The code came back up. The majority of writeups on this has the vapor canister purge solenoid valve as the likely culprit.

No gas cap, nor provision for one.

On GM vehicles of that era that solenoid was a big problem. I wonder if Ford had the same supplier?

Hard to tell. I haven't seen it offered by Motorcraft.

I ordered a new solenoid valve and installed it Sunday. I erased the code and it hasn't reappeared.

Rex, I will keep my fingers and toes crossed that fixed your problem. If it was GM, I would guarantee the problem would be solved.

Rex, you are becoming quite the Ford troubleshooter. Ever thought of a career change? There is big money in that these days. Good luck.

If I can keep my money these days, that'll do. Sometimes Youtube can be a good ally.
