I would love to find a GE or Frigidaire range in white and 30". I wish my kitchen had room for a super deluxe 40 incher as I would have it in a heart beat. It is really hard to find the vintage ranges that are in good shape. Maybe someday!

My Mom's is in the 2-oven size; does that make it 40 inch?? And it's white... and in MIchigan....

Firedome, that picture of the Frigidaire "Jet" action washer reminds me of what a great washer they were. They actually cleaned the clothes well. I never had one, but remember an in-law had one. It started leaking and we replaced the rubber bellows that connected to the agitator, but it started leaking again in a few months. They ended up replacing the washer but were sad it had to go. I think that was over twenty years ago. I wish they were still available because they worked well.

I still can't figure out how a little disc on the bottom of the wash tub can clean clothes. When I bought my latest laundry pair I went to a front loader. At least I can understand the cleaning process, and it actually does a decent job - I bought Bosch and now see they don't sell them anymore, at least in my area.

Appliance collecting is a new one to me, but I do see the attraction, some of those older appliances were very well made, and attractive. When I redid my kitchen I replaced a Frigidaire stove and fridge. I think they were late 70's models in avocado. My Amana refrigerator in the new kitchen died at 15 years, compressor shot.

My parents' first washer was a 1951 Frigidaire. It eventually developed a bad bearing and I set it aside to salvage the motor. When I started to disassemble it, I found these beautiful machined gears and a pressure lube system. It was too cool to trash so I put it back together and bought replacement parts. Eventually I got tired of repairing an old device and donated it to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. (They took t even though it was a GM product!).

Guys, our trolley has veered from the rails pretty badly in this thread. While I have enjoyed the pictures of Roger's collection, and the comments about it, it would be better from a forum integrity standpoint to start a thread about appliances if you'd like.

Can the last 10 or so posts be moved to such an "appliance thread" while retaining the relevant "4000 posts" comments?
I have info replying directly to what's been discussed here already.

Again I know nothing about websites... the appliance stuff started as a reply/result of the fact we discuss disparate topics I guess.

We get carried away from the topic all the time. That is a part of what makes us unique. I felt that you had put so much effort into posting pics, and that the conversation so interesting it was a shame to bury it in this thread. I can try to move to its own thread if you would like. Maybe we should starf a board for other toys?

Go ahead with the appliance discussion. I'll mess it up trying to move it. Going forward, if we see that a sub topic is getting this big, we should start its own thread.

To answer Chris's question, your Mom's stove/range is either a 36" or a 40". It just depends on the size of the second oven. My guess, 40".

Yes the double oven ranges were 39" or 40" depending on make.

I'd just wanted to say that a good source for vintage appliances is CL appliance section, and increasingly on FBM, just like with consoles... it seems more commerce is moving there.

Some real experts there, including the 50 yr. dealer/service guy I mentioned. Also I'd meant to say that he won't sell, but WILL service, Chinese/Korean brands, and they need a lot of service! As do the German brands Miehle, Bosch, etc.
and don't even ask about parts availability on the latter.

BTW Whirlpool was just named #4 out of 500 of "The most Environmentally Responsible US Companies".
As now the only US made/owned appliance manufacturer (GE was sold to Haier {China}) and Frigidaire was sold to
Electrolux {Sweden}) all the more reason to support them. They also make Amana, Kitchen Aid, Maytag and Jenn-Air
and some Kenmores. We have 2 US made WP top-freezer fridges 10 and 8 yrs old, both have been perfect so far (knock on wood!) and a WP dryer at 25 yrs old that still works great! They make great dishwashers too.

The Frigidaire 1-18 Jet-Cones were one of, if not the, best cleaning washers ever made, still by GM at that point (until 1979 when it was sold to White Consolidated Industries - ie crappy crap). They made I think it was at least 4 different drivetrains post late 1940s: Unimatic, Multimatic, Rollermatic, 1-18 Jetcone - all used the same basic up+down agitator concept, killed off by the WCI takeover. Speed Queen is the best US washer made now, commercial quality built to last at least 20 years.

Jet Cone 1-18 in action... washing starts at 4:00... just look at that turnover!
