Our first grapefruit of the year. Merry Christmas everybody!

Fresh grapefruit off the tree.

Man, I lost my lemon and very large grapefruit in
the Big Freeze of February.

It was TX Ruby Red fruit, and they weighed in at
2 to 2.5 pounds avg. (yeah, big 'uns)

They were fully ripe around mid January.

Sweet as could be. I used to pick up to 200 fruit.

Gave away about 85% of them to people who
had never had a truly good grapefruit.
Lots of smiles from that !

I really miss my trees.

I like the bacon, biscuits, gravy and hash browns but I'll have to pass on the grapefruit.

I've attended the Grand Ole Opry a few times and one time Grandpa Jones was there. Somebody up in the balcony yelled, "Hey Grandpa, what's for supper?" Without missing a beat he rattled of a long line of foods. Everybody got a good laugh out of that one.

Yeah, I kinda plagerized Grandpa Jones.

The grapefruit on that little tree get better every year. This is the first year they have been cared for, since we have been here full time.

Danny, the grapefruit you buy in a store and the ones you pick off the tree are two totally different things. The ones in the store are not ripened on the tree. We wait until the first frost to start picking our citrus. The story goes, in AZ at least, that frost makes them sweet. These on our little dwarf grapefruit tree are sweet as oranges. I was not a grapefruit fan until I ate an AZ grapefruit fresh off the tree. They are best in the spring, just before the tree blooms again.

Sorry, now I'm the fumble-fingered one.

All of those foods are forbidden. I've got heart disease and all that fried and fatty stuff, delicious as it is, is basically poisonous. But oh my, how delicious!!

And grapefruit, geez, that ought to be in the "allowed" column, right? It's fruit!!! Wrong. It has an adverse effect on one of the heart medications. Can't recall which. Probably a BP med. But since grapefruit won't actually plug me up, I sometimes cheat on this one. Actually, I cheat whenever there's some grapefruit at hand.

It must be like store bought off season tomatoes vs fresh garden tomatoes. I wouldn't give a plug nickel for the tomatoes you can buy in the store right now. I haven't ever had the chance to eat a grapefruit right off of a tree. Now you have me wanting to try one but the chances are slim since I'm not in an area that grows them.
