Phonola 1057

Discussions about instruments in smaller cabinets. If they don't set on the floor, they belong here. Tube and solid state, stereo and mono.

Phonola 1057

Post: # 30958Post Hi-Fi-Mogul »

Started the re-cap on this three tube 1958 Waters-Conley player.

Someone had put in a 47 mF cap for the 80 mF filter.
They put in a 10 mF cap for the 20 mF cathode bypass cap.

And they left all the old wax/paper caps so I would not
be bored !

They left the B- wire from the old capacitor can connected in circuit.

I'll finish up by installing the new correct 82 mF, and
new 22 mF filter caps.

This gal has 3 speakers in the cabinet, so I hope the
sound is good.

I've already serviced the V-M changer.

(BTW, the Sams has several wiring and notation errors,
if anyone may spot them)

Sams gets a bad rap for making mistakes. My thinking is that, on record player amps especially, that manufacturers used the same basic amp for many different models. They would move components to accomodate the different arrangements in cabinets. That record player should sound pretty good. What cartridge does it use?

Greg,

There is a Sonotone 2-T in the tonearm.

IIRC, it is functional.

As you stated, these 50C5, 12AV6, 35W4 amps were ubiquitous,
and my next phono is a Zenith AP9-B with a very similar
50C5, 12AV6, 35W4 chassis.

The Sonotone 2-T is a nice, warm sounding cartridge. I'm assuming some version of the VM 1200 series, right?

That's not a standard low-end amp. Look at the interesting bass control, using a separate tap on the output transformer. The treble control is a standard high-cut design running high off to ground. It's always cool when somebody gets creative.

I will be interested in reports on how it sounds.
