Transmission Q

Post: # 27941Post TC Chris »

Maybe one of you can answer this. The manual transmission on the old Ranger is getting hard to shift into 1st and 4th. 2-3-5 are generally easy to slide into but 1 & 4 can require some muscle. No grinding or crunching, just hard to get into. Diagnosis?

First off, I'd say the clutch needs adjusting. Some of the gears currently have more robust synchro action, allowing easier shifts.

That will eventually degrade those synchros, so have that adjustment done ASAP, it should be a simple & quick job to save your transmission.

I'll have a look-see. It's a hydraulic clutch.

I figured it was hydraulic, that is what my Ranger was so I am pretty sure there is no adjustment.

Had a camaro once that had the hydraulic clutch.
It gets weak..at that time gm had a kit .master cylinder, slave and hose .all together. Bleed ready to install.
Its not in a metal housing plastic,Nylon
I think it expands with age and dont get full range.
So you'll have to see if the slave cylinder is going the full range when clutch is polished in

Another suggestion would be to check the fluid/oil in the transmission. Also, synchronizers in the gearbox could actually be going bad. The shift rail in the transmission itself could also have some burrs or some wear causing some gears to shift hard.
Life can be tough. It can be even tougher if you're stupid.....
