Re: 1941 Buick!
The 1941 version of the Buick 320 cid straight 8 with compound carburetion (2 ea. 2-barrel carburetors) had the highest horsepower output of any engine built by GM in 1941, at 165 horsepower. The 346 Cadillac V-8 was only rated at 160 horsepower. The downside of the 1941 Buick engines was their use of 10 mm. spark plugs. They were prone to fouling and were hard to service. Grandpa thought the 1941 320's were THE best automotive engine ever built. His specialty was using the big 320 for repowering lesser equipment. He put one in a Farmall F-30 tractor, a '47 International KB-8 truck. Uncle Fort's sawmill. With head work, a 1948 or later "Dynaflow engine" cylinder head with larger valves, 18mm. plugs, hydraulic lifters and maybe a hotter cam, Mallory ignition and two big Carter two-barrels off a later V-8, he claimed he could get an "honest" 300 horsepower out of a 320. He could turn one at 4500 rpm with some crankshaft balance work and insert bearings. Not bad for an engine with an almost 6" stroke! The 320 he put in the International truck would run loaded with ten tons (!) at 45 mph steady, really trucking in those days in a gas burner. It got a solid 3 mpg, so it hauled more fuel than cargo.......
All versions of the Buick straight 8 could be had with compound carburetion in 1941. Thanks for sharing, Doc.....
