VM-1241 ?

this is out of the Motorola ... is this spring in the correct position?, seems to be interfering with everything while in the 78 position... it seems to be too thick for where it goes , but this is what was in there...the Sam's doesn't tell you squat on where it attaches , just shows the spring in the blown up picture

1. One thing that may be incorrect is the orientation
of the idler link.

Some of those idler links' mounting projections are of
different heights in some V-M changers.

2. Is the idler spring located in the right place ?

I just restored a V-M 1241 out of a large portable
Motorola.

That's the problem, IDK if the spring is in the correct place or not , the Sam's does not show where it attaches, there are 2 different holes on the idler wheel assembly , I still think the spring is too large of a diameter where it is located , if it is the correct spring , someone has stretched the hook out of shape at one end

Yes, Elton, that spring is WAY too large and not the correct one. There are different springs, it is called the "idler spring," and Gary should have the correct one for you, just provide him with the correct changer number.

Bill, good catch. From those large photos, I could not tell
the spring's length size.
It did look way too fat, though.

No, it is four speed.

Two level idler drive wheels were used extensively in 1950's V-M
changers.

VM site says this changer was from 1960

Even into the 1960's VM used that style idler. The big part is driven by the motor and the smaller part drives the platter. This system was used by VM to allow freewheeling after shutting off. At least all of the ones I have are built that way.

The little RCA 45 changer I worked on had a drive tire like that. Were the changers with the two step drive tire an upgrade from the ones I'm more familiar with?

Not sure about an upgrade but definitely a design change.

One thing I can say about these idlers is ...they don't turn to rock like the single drives from VM do...this is the second one I have dealt with, and they have been in good condition , rubber is still pliable on this one as well...
