Inexpensive Storage

Post: # 1937Post 19&41 »

I have prescriptions for maintenance meds and I've found a use for the prescription vials they come with. I use closed cell polyethylene foam. I'ts usually used to cushion electronics and appliances. You take 1 vial of the size you will use in storage, cut the closed end from the vial and put a bevel on that open end to fashion an edge. You can then use the vial like a cookie cutter, or wad cutter in the foam. It will cut a hole that will fit a vial snugly. Use a little sandpaper on the lid and you can mark them with the contents. save the foam cylinders the cutter made and you can cut a piece to place in the bottom of the vial to press the pins of your all glass tubes into and they make a good container for them. Here a foam block I made at work with the vials in place with my cutter in front. It has held up rather well over 6 years of daily use.

I save medicine bottles. I never thought of that. Isn't that the same foam used in those foam insulation sheets you can get at home supply stores, Home Depot, Lowes, etc? Sometimes, they will give them to you if they are broken and can't be sold as new.

The foam insulation, the pink or blue stuff, is expanded polystyrene. The polyethylene foam is the more flexible, resilient stuff usually used for packing and shipping protection. I snag it from the boatyard dumpster or in the boat barn where somebody has opened a box.
