Re: Philco Ford battery op record player (skunked again on eBay!)

Also, the headphone jack has a contact that, when closed, lets the speaker operate. Plug in headphones it cuts out the speaker. I have a Sherwood receiver with this problem. It drove me nuts diagnosing it. I kept looking for something electronic and it was mechanical after all. Poke a plug in and ou...

Once you're done with the formalities, post some photos of your prize, with info on make and model. Describe your distortion and when you hear it.

Re: Finally Retired

I waited 8 days for the back x-rays to be read and when they were not, today I sat down and sent a firm email to the hospital. "What the "deleted" are you doing?" but politely. And firmly. They were read within 2 hours. They showed nothing bad for a guy my age (my brother, the do...

Re: A Rat Gets It's Own Statue

Keep in mind the birds, the migratory ones. I put up a purple martin apartment house in the spring and the birds find it. The martins are site-faithful: they return to the same house every year. That means they fly to South America and back, finding their way each direction. I've seen hummingbirds b...

Re: Finally Retired

On the subject of health lamentations, I had x-rays taken a week ago (Th., 4/2). The doctor still doesn't have them so cannot make treatment decisions. I called the practice again today and was told the hospital does not have enough radiologists. Meanwhile, I cannot walk standing up--have to bend ov...

Check the leads on the antenna--probably a ferrite bar loop? Sometimes the break.

Re: A Rat Gets It's Own Statue

We're getting better at recognizing the special competence of many animals and getting a bit less assured about the absolute superiority of humans. Octopuses, for example, have superior intelligence despite having very different brain forms and short lives. Yesterday I was driving out of the marina ...

Re: Finally Retired

Know what gives me some relief? Driving 2.75 hours in my new Tacoma truck. It's a low-end model without heated or 60-way adjustable seats, but for some reason it's like a treatment. At work I've got my standing computer desk in the sit position and keep a heating pad on the back all day, to no avail...

Re: Finally Retired

I retired from my job of 20 years the last of February. The 2nd of march my back went out and it really hobbled me. Mine went out two weeks ago. I can't walk without bending over at about 40 degrees. I've been saying I walk like an old man but, at 78, I am an old man, so I've changed it to "li...

The dial shows broadcast-band and two SW bands, the higher up to 18 mHz.

How about a photo of the innards? Tuning cap gangs, output tubes (P-P?) and speaker size can give clues to quality.

Re: No blooms on grapefruit tree

I love grapefruit but it's forbidden because it nullifies one of my meds, maybe the atorvastatin? When I got my stents I was warned I could not eat it. Sometimes I throw all caution to the winds and eat it anyway. I have all the accoutrements--grapefruit knife, grapefruit spoons. Ibuprofen is also f...

Re: Buick-Olds-Pontiac car show

Many GTO's are LS powered. Rebuilding Pontiac engines is too expensive. Aluminum radiators replace brass, again, brass is three times what aluminum costs. Buicks, Olds, and Cadillacs run their original drivetrains. Wonder why that is? All in all, a dandy day. Being warm is the price we pay to live ...

When Eddie introduced me to this album, I had never heard of John Prine. I don't have, nor am I familiar with, any of his other work. I sure do enjoy this album. ;) :D You need to find his first album. It's a stunner. I've got a cassette copy that lives out in the shop. If he had done nothing in lif...

Re: John Prine "In Spite of Ourselves"

John Prine could sing the phone book and I'd listen. As a songwriter, his prowess was hard to match. He was humane. Without that quality, you can be famous, you can be powerful, but you're still unimportant.

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe, A505 amp board

After doing some Googling research, and posting some questions on ARF, and experimenting, I've made a few circuit changes. I added .001uF mylars to the base of each driver which killed the oscillation without affecting the frequency response. Ended up replacing both driver transistors, one was nois...

Re: Sitting at home--snow

The city had to hire a welder for my water line about 10 years ago. It runs under the street. The street is plowed, which removes the snow that insulates the ground elsewhere. (The area at the snow-ground interface is the "subnivium" and it's usually around 32 deg. even when things are hel...
