Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
Sound wise, I think it suffers greatly from the side firing speaker arrangement. Sounds pretty dull when listening to a record from a position in the front since all the treble is shot out sideways. I'm also wondering if the replacement cartridge has different enough characteristics compared to the ...

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
I've bought several types of Bluetooth adapters from Amazon over the years, but the one I installed on this project works really well. It has a "3D" button which sounds like it boosts bass and treble, and that makes it sound really good on this unit. After some experimenting, I ran the Blu...

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
It's been a while since I posted my progress on this guy, but I've pretty much finished up so here's the latest. The oscillation issue kept raising its ugly head:-I realized that there was still a low-level 8-10 Hz background oscillation that was present almost all the time, could only see it on the...

Re: General Electric RC-4851 coffee table stereo
FYI, the schematic I uploaded (from radiomuseum), and the one in the 1964 Beitman's book are only for the amp, which worked for me since my model doesn't have the tuner. And the component designations in the radiomuseum schematic don't agree with the PCB markings in my model, though it's accurate ot...

The unit is missing it's Magnavox emblem, I think it may have looked like this (screenshot photo from a different model). 1000002699_edited.jpeg The holes in my unit look like this, the two holes on the left are 1" apart, the third one is 1 1/8" from the middle one. PXL_20260323_234640035~...

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
Replaced the cartridge in the changer with the Pfanstiehl P-226D in Gary's kit, managed to get all the tiny fiddley pins soldered, had to widen the slots in the provided plastic mount, plus the little screws were longer than in the pictures of the instructions provided, but after all that it sounds ...

Loved the video and the stories--the tale of a true underdog! Yet another example of good ole Yankee ingenuity lost on most of us, if it weren't for such videos and recollections. Thanks for sharing!

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
The choice of transistor was the result of Google AI providing some silicon types that were commonly used for germanium replacements, plus some other videos and articles that I found. I ordered an assortment from Amazon that had the 2N3906 along with 9 other types, (250 transistors for only $7!!!). ...

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
Well, at this point, I still prefer tubes! I earned my EE degrees at the turn of the 60s to 70s: tubes were passe, semiconductors were the focus, but 1s and 0s and ICs were my specialty. Google has been immensely helpful in reviving my elderly memory when it comes to transistors. When I picked up th...

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe, A505 amp board
After doing some Googling research, and posting some questions on ARF, and experimenting, I've made a few circuit changes. I added .001uF mylars to the base of each driver which killed the oscillation without affecting the frequency response. Ended up replacing both driver transistors, one was noisy...

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
I've replaced the feedback caps, but didn't try different values. However, I have since confirmed that cooling one of the second transistors, X2/X6, will stop the oscillation. Cooling the one in the other channel also has an effect, though less so. Leakage is over 2ma when the transistor is tested o...

ARG!!! So I got t the new cart from Gary, started to remove the old cart and discovered that its ground wire had loosened, reattached it, and the old cart sounded OK! But then I noticed some very low frequency rumbling, so I thought I was getting feedback through my plastic workbench top from the do...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
Installed and working! It looks great, but I'm not entirely satisfied with the sound, seems a little "boomy" so I might look into that later with a signal generator to see what's going on, maybe fiddle with the crossover caps. The box next to the changer is the selector for phono or Blueto...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
My novice advice re veneering project I watched lots of videos on YouTube, one was especially helpful for a beginner like me, with zero veneer experience: https://youtu.be/Tpus_MULatI?si=s6cnkr2nL7Sr6Bc1 I bought the 2' x 8' veneer from home Depot, it comes rolled up in a cardboard box. Mahogany was...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
Thank you, guys, for your kind words. I learned a lot about veneering since every visible piece of wood is veneered!
It sounds pretty good, not like my Moto SK-111 of course. I've also added Bluetooth via a selector switch, I'll post some additional pics on that soon.

Finished, ready to move into the living room!
Finally. The wife loves it, so we'll replace our existing coffee table with this one! Here's several shots of the completed project, no more early American look. I took these pics in the garage (wife's car in the shop), but the lighting is poor. Interesting how the grain direction and lighting influ...

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
Well after working on cleaning up and lubing, the tracking seems to be much better, but it's hard to tell because the cartridge is shot, sounds terrible. So I've ordered the kit Gary recommended. Wasted money on the new stylus that I bought a while back!

Re: Micromatic W603 (1964-5) questions
Thanks for the advice on the label, I'll try removing and glueing. Here's something that might be helpful to some of you; in cleaning the top surface of the changer, I've been using isopropyl alcohol and car wax. But it takes a lot of scrubbing to remove some of the spots. I've had this gun cleaning...
