Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
Whoops, I meant to say flat blade instead of flat head. Not familiar with "minus head" term, but after looking it up, that's the type the Motorola used.

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
The legs screw in, should be easy to remove, but you have to remove those masonite bottom panels to get to them. I agree that grille cloth would be better looking, just have to get the right color! I was happy to find that this cabinet is solidly built, and uses Phillips head screws instead of flat ...

Re: The "new" RCA Victor 45-rpm record system
A great example of thinking "inside the box", assuming what the customers wanted, without considering that a longer playing record would be a more desirable feature. People were already used to the 12" records. 20-20 hindsight, of course. In my youth, 45s were kids and teenage records...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
Thanks for those suggestions, Chris and Bill. To use a mat, I think I should completely remove the old glued-on stuff so I wouldn't have a double thickness. Maybe even salvage the silver ring to apply to the replacement mat! I'll first see if I can locate some of the black goop that might match the ...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
Finished up the changer, everything works now! One of the trip parts on the cam was completely seized, a common problem with this model, apparently. Had to use a heat gun to get it loose, everything else was just cleaning, lubrication and adjustments. The guy in the video I consulted did not do a co...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
So to work on the electronics, I flipped this guy upside down on top of my trusty old B&D Workmate. 1000002190.jpg I replaced the 3 filter caps and the bias bypass cap, there's really no mounting location, a little too thick to go under the shallow chassis, so I put them inside a piece of PVC pu...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
Cleaned up the surfaces (grey/black film on everything), straightened the twist in the tonearm, cleaned the cartridge and straightened the bend in the stylus shank. I even found the little round insert that fits in the control panel when I flipped the cabinet upside down to work on the chassis! And ...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
While waiting for my electrolytics to arrive, I pulled the changer (yay for connectors!) and began cleaning it up cosmetically. The tone arm has a twist in it as if someone tried to remove the cartridge head with a lot of violence (I removed it just fine). Hopefully just a bent mounting plate above ...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
Thanks for the advice and observations, y'all. It's a maple finish, in keeping with the colonial motif, I suppose. It'll be darker by the time I'm through with it! The little louvers are also "colonially" looking, and directed down, which surely doesn't help with sound dispersion. I may re...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
I would never plug these things in before recapping, at least any electrolytics. The seller said he plugged it in and the pilot lit up, "but it just hummed", I told him to please don't plug it in again! Maybe it's a good sign that it at least "hummed" and wasn't dead... The enclo...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
Here's another model year I found on the web which is not colonial style, I like those legs better! Should be easy to make copies to replace mine.

GE Wellington coffee table, model RC 4842-A
Brought it home yesterday--I actually made it fit in the back of my VW Golf. Great Marketplace seller, wish they were all like that! 1000002135.jpg 1000002106.jpg So here are a few pre-restoration pictures to show how this thing is put together (it's lying on its back). The down-firing 8" "...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table stereo
Picked it up today, it has the GE C-100 cart, very dirty, but actually still has the stylus in place! I will start a new thread in the Other Consoles section in a day or two. Planning a full restoration, and will probably darken the finish a little in the process, the maple is a little mismatched fo...

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
Yeah, all electolytics replaced, the .1mf in the feedback circuits were not replaced, I didn't have but one handy, but the originals both checked good. While one channel was oscillating, the one with the single larger speaker, I tried substituting my one new .1mf, but no change in the oscillation, s...

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
Correction on the balance control --it's connecting the negative feedback circuit of each channel together through that pot! I can't figure out how that works, and in practice it really sounds crummy: there is a significant change in the fidelity/loudness as the control is rotated, with the center p...

Re: GE Wellington coffee table stereo
it's a Garrard, maybe a "slimline" from my research, but I haven't seen it in person yet. Hopefully the cartridge is OK, but we shall see!

Re: GE Wellington coffee table stereo
I did find some schema for the amp this thing has, single ended 6AQ5's, same as some of the mid-60's GE portables. Not going to be as robust as my SK111, but I think the cabinet is going to look really nice!

Re: GE Wellington coffee table stereo
I've arranged to meet the seller Saturday to pick up the unit. He's been kind enough to meet me halfway to save me a long drive. If all goes well, I'll start another thread for the restoration project!

Re: $5 Riviera Deluxe
Well, the oscillation was because my left channel test speaker had a loose connection on the rear terminals, and I didn't realize it, so that channel didn't like an open circuit load! Now the little amp appears to work just fine. It's not a very sophisticated amp, of course. What's really str...
