My older son (a physicist and medical instrument designer for Agilent) has been mulling around the idea of making an affordable guitar amp head using cheap TV horizontal amplifier tubes and common production tubes for impecunious guitarists (and it seems that's most of them LOL) for a few years now. He's worked up a tentative design, his problem is time, and production would be an issue. To keep price low the output + power transformers have to be cheap but good. Edcor had some that satisfied his criteria, they have an output xfrmr that will work for under $30, about 7-8W output; price goes up somewhat with more Watts. Other DIYers seem to like them for their projects also. Just a thought.

Roger, if you have their contact information, why not put Edcor here on this board so members can refer to it?

It looks like a bunch of the Edcors are in the $45-ish range.

Thanks, Elton. One of these days, I will start my search again and hopefully I will find something that will work. The amp is single ended with a ton of caps that need replacing. The cabinet is in good shape, and I actually have someone that wants it if I can get it repaired. I told them not to be in any hurry and they were good with that.

Bill ... for my Zenith I used a 325-0-325 output with 5 volt and 6.3 volt windings can't remember the current draw but it fell right into the margins needed from AES , i originally bought it for a RCA tombstone with a frying power transformer... I still have that one frying away...at the time it was around 60 bucks , I would bet they are higher now...

Also Edcor makes some very affordable good transformers that may be more reasonably priced than Hammond on sale.

They will also make to custom order and don't seem to charge extra for it over similar wattage stock items if you need special taps &c.

Maybe go to the Hammond web site first and see if they offer a suitable one, then go to AES and order the right #?
